Slow Computer Tips

Improve the speed of your slow computer

Just as with houses or cars, computers benefit from ongoing maintenance to prevent them from becoming cluttered, slow and unreliable. The processes that make computers useful in our daily lives such as being able to install/uninstall software or being able to quickly search the web for that vital piece of information, result in file waste and detritus, temporary files, cached web pages, invalid or broken registry links. These can, if not managed, slow your computer down, delay its boot time and may even result in failure. Just as with our own home house keeping or car maintenance there are a number of relatively simple things you can do to limit this, the computer equivalent of ensuring you have oil and washer fluid in the car. By following the simple processes outlined below you will be able to speed up your slow computer (if no regular regimen is in place) or maintain performance by regularly performing these tasks.

  • Empty Temp directory regularly (Weekly)

  • Empty the Temp browser files regularly (Weekly)

  • Regularly run anti Spyware, Adware and Virus scanning programs (Daily)

  • Defrag your computer regularly (3-Monthly:more frequently if you install/uninstall lots of software).

  • Limit the number of icons on your Desktop. Launch from the Quick launch toolbar.

  • Limit RAM use by reducing the number of programs that start at launch.

  • Regularly tidy up the registry (Monthly).

  • Don’t use a picture on the Desktop, it uses memory.

  • Don’t use the Active Desktop feature.
